Abstract

The study aims to evaluate the service provided to patients in labor and delivery, using the observation of the care provided and the research of women's satisfaction. Exploratory descriptive study carried out with 21 postpartum women admitted to a maternity hospital in Ceará. Data were collected with the aid of instruments that guided the observation of professionals during the attendance of participants, and interviews with puerperal women. Participants had a mean age of 23.2 years (± 6.2), most of them were single and with income less than one minimum wage. None of the women interviewed had experience of another type of delivery that was not natural delivery. Of the 14 indicators observed, only three were met in all cases, and these are related to answering questions of the mother, to promote affective bonding between mother and child, and an appropriate environment for labor and delivery. According to the opinion of the women, obtained during the interview, the indicators were not met satisfactorily. This study showed that many indicators related to quality of delivery are not being met satisfactorily. These findings reflect a deficient assistance with regard to the humanization of care offered to pregnant women.
