Online Brazilian Journal of Nursing
celebrates its fourth anniversary

The 4th birthday of the Online Brazilian Journal of Nursing (OBJN) is a good occasion to review its trajectory, to thank the many who contributed to the good performance, and to point out the future of the journal.

Online Brazilian Journal of Nursing, published by the Professional Master in Nursing Program /Fluminense Federal University, is an Open Access, free scientific and peer-reviewed online journal. It provides knowledge interchange among Brazilian and international researchers and practitioners in the field of nursing, health, and issues related to these fields. Without support of advertisers or research funds, the journal publishes original research, updated reviews, thesis abstracts, book/media reviews, and professional issues.

The OBJN is freely and universally accessible online, and its authors retain copyright, allowing anyone to reproduce or disseminate articles, according to the copyright laws. The “natural born web “ nature of the Online Brazilian Journal of Nursing makes it easy to publish colour illustrations and (near future) video clips. The possibility to go immediately to LILACS, CUIDEN, CINAHL, and other databases, may increase the OBJN scientific impact [1]

Actually, the Google is the biggest search system at the internet. When we make a search using the word nursing, we found this:
**The OBJN is the 42th /282.000.000 registers. The PageRank is based on the democratic nature of the Web. Each link means the worth of the website.

When important sites create a link to the OBJN, for example, they contribute to increase the importance of the OBJN.

The Online Brazilian Journal of Nursing evolved from the electronically form to the online submission system. Full details of how to submit a manuscript are given in the Authors Guidelines and in my article[2].

Online Brazilian Journal of Nursing reviews all the material it receives. About 80 % of manuscripts are rejected after a first review. The usual reason for rejection at this stage is insufficient adhesion to the Author Guidelines. The remaining articles are sent to the librarian and an external reviewer. Reviewers advise the editor, who is responsible for the final decision to accept or reject the manuscript.

After the utilization of the online system (August, 2005), we can say that the acceptance rate of the journal has been 17,69%, with time from submission to primary decision less than 60 days. A total of 465 authors were registered, and 12 articles have been published (one number).

Now the OBJN reaches more than 5,000 online readers and has a 3,000 email-list. The electronic/online nature of the OBJN makes it easy to monitor the level of interest of the journal and of the individual articles.

Since April 2004 until today (old issues), the OBJN has received more than 18,000 visits. The old site continue to receive readers everyday (16-28 visits/day). We can see in the images above that the geographic origin of the authors and readers is also interesting. Brazil, United States, Canada, Portugal, United Kingdom, Philippines, Australia, Spain, Uruguay, Sweden, and others (Malta, Iran, Thailand, South Africa, for example) represent 5 continents and more than 10 different countries. The OBJN reaches more the Brazilian nurses (64%). Font (image): http://www.webstats4u.com/s?tab=1&link=1&id=2963790 March 26th, 2006.

Since August 2005 (online issue), OBJN website statistics overview shows that the returning visitors are the majority of our readers/authors (66,7%). The OBJN receveid more than 5,000 visits in only 7 months (40-80 visits/day). Font (image): http://counter16.bravenet.com/index.php?id=389657&usernum=1323061894, March 26th, 2006.

In our special ranking podium (until March 26th, 2006), the top three most frequently accessed articles in the last number have been:

3rd prize (1270 readers)

Barroso, Poliana, Fortes, Allyne, and Lopes, Marcos Venícios. "Alcoholic liver cirrhosis: a systematic review ." Online Brazilian Journal of Nursing [Online], 4.3 1 Dec 2005 Available: http://www.uff.br/objnursing/viewarticle.php?id=48.

2nd prize (1387 readers)

Moreira, Rafaella, Guedes, Nirla, Cavalcante, Tahissa, da Silva, Viviane, and de Araujo, Thelma. "Educational workshops about arterial hypertension - a quasi-experimental study." Online Brazilian Journal of Nursing [Online], 4.3 1 Dec 2005 Available: http://www.uff.br/objnursing/viewarticle.php?id=26.

1st prize (1401 readers)

Cruz, Isabel. "How to submit an article online to the OBJN and discover the pleasure of publishing." Online Brazilian Journal of Nursing [Online], 4.3 1 Dec 2005 Available: http://www.uff.br/objnursing/viewarticle.php?id=56.

These three articles point out part of the interests of our readers and the efforts our reviewers. So, a special thanks to the reviewers who met the challenge to provide informed and timely information within the "short" 14 days deadline. Some of them are part of the Editorial Board which included experts representative of the nursing and health fields.

so, we have to conclude that the  Online Brazilian Journal of Nursing is an excellent option for authors, readers and advertisers. In these 5 years, many of the aspirations, hopes, and dreams have been realized and the OBJN growed up in a state of comparative good health. But we still have work hard through nursing empowerment - and the correlated economic empowerment.

For the future, we want to reach the African Portuguese countries. Besides, we plan to take even more advantage of the interactive nature of the journal. We hope that Editorials, Commentaries, Professional Issues, and Book/MediaReviews will be more present. Online Brazilian Journal of Nursing might become a good first choice for students, managers, and health professionals.

If you care about your patient and your profession and your practice is knowledge based, so the OBJN can be your journal.
